The Story

Matthew ‘Swervus’ Diaz is a Chicago-based music Producer, MC, and perhaps most proudly a father of two. Pulling from his black, white and Mexican heritage, Swervus has a rare musical perspective and seeks inspiration through the rhythms of everyday life. He helps artists elevate their music through high-quality production and a revolutionary approach to virtual recording. He aims to kill the notion that you need a studio or expensive gear to make incredible tracks.

His addiction to music started younger than most, when he began playing instruments at the age of 3, later discovering the saxophone in 1st grade. As he mastered the horn, he fell in love with the hip-hop scene watching his uncle produce beats and record at his in-home studio. It wasn’t long until he recreated that same magic with his own barebones setup.

He fell in love with the sounds of J Dilla, 9th Wonder, RJD2, The Alchemist, and DJ Premier, echoing their use of classic soul and funk samples. He quickly built a huge catalog of beats, utilizing samples from almost every genre, pushing his artistic limits. He prides himself on his unique ability to bend genres, sampling from the most unlikely sources. His most recent releases have been compared to Daily Bread, Late Night Radio, and Manic Focus.

As an MC, Swervus delivers story-driven songs teetering between aggressive and laid back stylings, using complex rhyme schemes, and exceptionally difficult phrasing. His songs reflect his own diverse heritage, incorporating elements from his family and classical training. Introducing these unlikely genres to his tracks, he creates a collision of themes and versatility that few can pull off. He specializes in blending electro-soul, funk and hip hop in a way that emulates analog delivery with high-definition digital methods. His delivery fits perfectly in a playlist amongst Oddisee, Run The Jewels, Saba, and Denzel Curry. Whether creating a moody instrumental track or a lyrically-driven rap song, Swervus integrates his timeless signature style both on the mic and during production.

In 2022, Swervus had an epiphany that inspired a new style of virtual production, rewriting the way people think of “the studio”. Using new digital methods, he recreates the elevated atmosphere of traditional recording while allowing clients to record higher quality tracks than ever from home. As he regularly releases new beats and original tracks alike, he invites artists to collaborate in a new way that unearths their unique signature sound, no matter their location or budget.
